DESCRIPTION:
National Newborn Screening Awareness Month raises awareness about the importance of newborn screening to determine any potential health issues.
Newborn screening began in 1963 with a screening test designed by Dr. Robert Guthrie to screen for PKU, a disorder where the body cannot process phenylalanine.
Newborn screening is administered within the first 48 hours after the delivery.
